Science Textbook- pages 62-63 Properties of Minerals

  • Read

  •  look at the pictures

  • read the captions

  • Answer the following questions in complete sentences

1. Why can’t we use color to identify quartz?

remember: the mineral quartz can be white, but so can the minerals calcite and halite.

Many minerals have the same color . So we need to use other properties, in addition to color, to tell minerals apart.

2. What is streak?

3. Why is streak a useful property to use to identify a mineral?

Look at the gold and pyrite on page 63

What property of gold and pyrite are similar?

Remember: Back in the 1800s, gold miners often found pyrite and thought it was gold.

Because the miners were fooled by pyrite’s gold color, they called it “fool’s gold.”

How could the miners have compared gold and pyrite to identify them?

How do the streaks of the two minerals differ?
